چکیده

The Semantic Web anticipates rich, integrated access to a large number of information sources on the Internet. Since a large number of websites are backed by SQL databases, methods that automate the integration of these databases with the Semantic Web are crucial. This paper surveys methods used to create ontological descriptions of databases by examining the database schema, normally known as direct mapping methods. Compared to wrapping methods, which map databases to existing legacy ontologies, direct mapping methods have the advantage that they are intrinsically automated. In this review we first identify a correspondence between individual syntactic structures in SQL data description language (DDL) and layers of the Semantic Web stack, and we then characterize each research effort's transformation methods with respect to the expressive hierarchy of the Semantic Web languages themselves. Much of the prior work on direct mapping is expository in nature, relying heavily on examples. From this foundation, we define a unifying transformation system using transformation rules defined using first-order-logic. We show that the unified system is complete with respect to all possible associations formed by combinations of primary-key and foreign-key constructs. The unified transformation system has been implemented using the JESS rule engine, and has been made available to the community as a web-service.

A Bootstrapping Architecture for Integration of Relational Databases to the Semantic Web

The vision of the Semantic Web is to create a web of data with well-defined meaning. Most data in the current web is managed by relational databases. Thus, it is imperative for the Semantic Web community to offer easily implemented solutions to bridging relational database content and RDF. Direct mappings means to use the SQL schema to create an OWL ontology and use it to represent the data in ...

Survey of directly mapping SQL databases to the Semantic Web

One of the most relevant aspects to be considered to ensure the success of the Semantic Web is the availability of semantic data. Since the majority of current websites are backed by relational databases, the transformation of this data Semantic Web languages is a great opportunity and is being currently addressed in Linked Data approaches. There are two main approaches for this data transforma...

On Directly Mapping Relational Databases to RDF and OWL (Extended Version)

Mapping relational databases to RDF is a fundamental problem for the development of the Semantic Web. We present a solution, inspired by draft methods defined by the W3C where relational databases are directly mapped to RDF and OWL. Given a relational database schema and its integrity constraints, this direct mapping produces an OWL ontology, which, provides the basis for generating RDF instanc...

Automapper: Relational Database Semantic Translation using OWL and SWRL

General purpose query interfaces to relational databases can expose vast amounts of content to the Semantic Web. In this paper, we discuss Automapper, a tool that automatically generates data source and mapping ontologies using OWL and SWRL. We also describe the use of these ontologies in our Semantic Distributed Query architecture, an implementation for mapping RDF queries to disparate data so...
